Pedestrian and cyclist hit on rainy night

Police are urging cyclists, pedestrians and drivers to keep an eye out for one another, drive slowly, and use reflective gear after two people were struck the night of Thursday, January 30.

A cyclist was hit approximately 7:35 p.m., January 30 near the crosswalk on Harvest Drive, by the Ladner bus loop. Officers attended the scene immediately, as did Delta Fire Department, to render assistance to the injured cyclist.

A vehicle was travelling on Harvest Drive, and struck the cyclist. The driver remained on the scene and called 9-1-1. The cyclist was taken to hospital but has since been released.

Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in this incident, nor is speed. It was raining heavily at the time of the collision.

In the second instance a pedestrian was struck at the corner of 84 Ave and 120 Street in North Delta. The pedestrian was crossing at a crosswalk, shortly before 10 p.m., with the walk sign activated. She was struck by a vehicle turning onto 120 Street.

At the time of the collision it was raining steadily. The pedestrian was taken to hospital with what are believed to be non-serious injuries. The cause of the collision is under investigation.

With rainy weather, particularly at night, it can be challenging for drivers to see pedestrians or cyclists. Pedestrians are urged to wear bright or reflective gear, or carry a flashlight, and it’s recommended that cyclists have lights in both the front and bike of their bike. Drivers are strongly encouraged to slow down, particularly near crosswalks and intersections, and to keep a careful lookout for pedestrians or cyclists, who may be wearing dark clothing.

Throughout this winter Delta Police volunteers have been conducting safety campaigns, to help encourage drivers to slow down and for pedestrians to take appropriate precautions.
