Fail to Stop-Standoff-Surrender: DPD Negotiate One into Custody

On March 22, 2017 shortly after midnight, a Delta Police officer attempted to stop a vehicle in the 9600 blk of 120th Street in North Delta the driver fled at a high rate of speed out of the area. The officer did not engage in a pursuit but information provided through the police data base indicated the registered owner resided in Delta in the 8900 blk of 112A Street.
The officer attended the registered owner’s address and found the vehicle in the driveway. While still in his police car, a male exited out of the suspect vehicle wielding a bat yelling and challenging the officer.
Additional officers arrived to assist but the male was undeterred by police presence and failed to comply with police commands shouting threats as he wielded the bat toward the officers.
Police deployed less lethal bean bag rounds striking the male but it appeared to have little effect and the suspect fled into his residence barricading himself. His behavior was aggressive and volatile.
Police had the area contained and started negotiations with the male and after some time he did exit the residence and was taken into custody with the aid of the K-9 unit.
Fortunately none of the police officers were injured in the ordeal and the male was taken into custody without further incident.
The male was taken to hospital for treatment of minor injuries and subsequently transported to jail.
The male identified as, 51 yr old Robert KNIGHT of Delta, is charged with, fail to stop, assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and uttering threats.
