Reserve Constable Program

Delta Police reserve constables are volunteers who participate in community policing and crime prevention activities while under the supervision of a police officer.

The reserve constable must commit to volunteer a minimum of 16 hours each month. The hours may include, but are not limited to training, ride-a-longs with patrol members and participation in community events and programs. There is also a mandatory monthly meeting.

The Delta Police recognizes that a number of applicants interested in the Reserve Program are also interested in obtaining employment as regular members. However, Delta Police also encourage civic-minded citizens who are solely interested in serving their community in a unique and rewarding manner, to also consider the Reserve Program.

Qualification Requirements

  • Canadian citizen or landed immigrant
  • Minimum 19 years of age
  • No criminal convictions, charges under another federal statute, or criminal charges pending
  • Grade 12 diploma or equivalent, plus one year (minimum 30 credits) of academic post secondary education from a recognized university or college (other course work of an equivalent level and duration and/or unique learned skill sets may be considered)
  • Current Class 5 BC driver's license and submission of a certified driving record
  • Vision of not less than 20/40 in one eye and 20/100 in the other, unaided; corrected to 20/20 and 20/30 with lenses. Candidates who have had successful laser eye surgery will be considered
  • Hearing loss in one ear not greater than 50 dB and the other ear not greater than 30 dB in the 500-3000 Hz range
  • Medical examination
  • Achieve 65% or better on the Delta Police Intake Exam
  • Successful interview
  • Complete POPAT in 4:15 minutes or better
  • Polygraph test
  • Background check

Training

The reserve constable training will be instructed locally in accordance with provincial policy guidelines mandated by the Ministry of the Attorney General's Police Services Division.

Instructional training will consist of a minimum of 90 hours of classroom instruction and practical training. Classes are generally held on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 1900-2200 hours, for a duration of four months. There are also three 8-hour Saturday sessions that take place for use-of-force training. Mid-term and final examinations will be administered by the Justice Institute of British Columbia.
