SFU students take to Delta streets to survey the community

Delta Police Partner with Simon Fraser University to assist Criminology students complete their degrees. Two students will carryout the field placement segment of their program at the Delta Police Department.

The two SFU students will be conducting a community survey speaking to citizens (private and corporate) throughout the municipality. This will not an empirical or scientific study but rather a survey to receive feedback from the community regarding the perception of crime, community priorities, views on the programs and services provided by the Delta Police Department.

The students will be primarily conducting random door-to-door interviews as well as some phone interviews throughout Delta including Commercial/Industrial areas. They will be working between the hours of 0900 a.m.-7:00 p.m. daily, from February 07 – March 31.

To address the potential concerns of citizens approached, the students will be wearing Delta Police jackets with "volunteer" printed on the back and both have been given photo identification and a letter of explanation signed by the Chief Constable and the Chair of the Police Board Mayor Jackson.

Chief Cessford states that, "Although this is not an empirical or scientific study it will provide us with a great opportunity to receive feedback from the community that we may otherwise not have been able to obtain. It is important to the Delta Police Department to hear from the citizens regarding their perception of crime, issues they see as priorities and their views on the services provided by their police department. The information gathered will be taken into account in the development of our 2006 strategic plan. I am looking forward to the students’ report".
