Integrated Canine Service (ICS)
Overview | Dog Teams | Activities/Reports
In an effort to maximize dog coverage for their communities, the Delta Police Department and New Westminster Police Service integrated their police dog services in January 2003.
ICS continues to be accountable to the communities, by working together effectively and efficiently to maintain the high level of public confidence and trust enjoyed by each agency's police dog service in the past.
The combined resources of ICS have allowed for continuity in training with dog teams receiving training from a single ICS Supervisor.
ICS dogs have been cross-trained in areas of Riot Control, Drug Detection, Firearms Detection, and Emergency Response Team capabilities.
A Joint Management Team from the Delta Police Department and the New Westminster Police Service oversees the administration of ICS ensuring equal input from both agencies.
ICS Office
ICS has an office on Annacis Island that serves as a training center and dog teams are often seen running tracks through the streets of Annacis Island.
Since its inception, the ICS has trained in-house dog teams and police dog teams from the Victoria Police Department, the West Vancouver Police Department, the Whatcom County Sheriff's Office, Lacey Police Department and Mount Vernon Police Department.
Weekly training nights are well attended and ICS have hosted police dog teams from numerous other Canadian and American Police Agencies.
Future of ICS
ICS is committed to providing professional, consistent and dedicated police dog service through integrated relationships among police agencies. Both Delta and New Westminster have benefited from the ICS by having more police dogs available for more complete dog coverage, as well as handlers being afforded the opportunity to work specialty dogs (explosives and drug detectors and dogs for the Tactical and Emergency Response Teams).
The support of the Delta Police Department and the New Westminster Police Service has ensured that the ICS will continue to expand and develop its expertise and continue to combat crime. Anyone requiring information regarding ICS is invited to contact Acting Sergeant Chris Borgstede at 604.946.4411.
