Disposal of Unwanted Firearms
Pursuant to the current Firearms Act which was enacted and became Law on December 1, 1998, all firearm owners must obtain a personal possession and/or acquisition firearms license. Personal possession and/or acquisition licensing is a requirement of the Firearms Act that is sometimes confused with firearm registration. The law clearly states that gun owners must have obtained personal possession and/or acquisition licenses or dispose of their firearms by December 31, 2000.
Although the deadline for obtaining a personal possession has passed, an acquisition license is still available. Details of requirements can be found from the Canadian Firearms Centre.
There are still provisions under this Act that allow owners of firearms that were not registered to register the firearm. This information is available from the Canadian Firearms Centre.
Owners who no longer want to keep firearms can dispose of them either by selling or transferring the firearms to a valid license holder in accordance with the Firearms Act, or may turn the unwanted firearms over to the Delta Police for disposal.
Additional information is available from:
Those owners who need to dispose of their unwanted firearms may call the Delta Police Department at 604.946.4411 for assistance. We ask that firearms not be brought directly to the police offices as transportation of a firearm without proper authorization and accompanying permits is prohibited. Once the request has been received, a police officer will come by and pick up the firearms. Please ensure that the firearm is unloaded and rendered safe to handle or is disassembled.
The Delta Police would like to remind citizens that unlawful possession of a firearm is a criminal offence. Persons found in contravention of the Firearms Act may be subject to criminal prosecution.
